How We Turned a Customer’s Idea into Rocketry Reality

Custom 3D Printing and Field Testing at Pamoir

At PAMOIR, we don’t just print cool things– we help turn ambitious ideas into functional prototypes and working models, tested and proven in the real world.

One recent project combined design, material science, and a bit of backyard rocketry to deliver a fully launch-able Bull-pup 12-D model rocket.

The Request

It started with a message from a customer who had a clear vision:

    • Designed to accept standard model rocket engines

    • Fitted with a 3/16” launch lug for easy mounting on hobby-grade launch pads

    • A functioning parachute return mechanism

Unlike a display piece, this rocket needed to look accurate and actually fly– a fun challenge we were more than ready to take on.

From CAD to Flight-Ready Design

Our design process began with modeling the Bullpup’s sleek, compact profile using CAD software. We optimized for:

    • Aerodynamics, to ensure a straight and stable flight

    • Weight distribution, especially around the engine mount and nose cone

    • Modular printing, making it easy to produce, assemble, and adjust.

We included an internal engine mount, a built-in guide for the launch rod, and a removable nose cone for recovery systems.

Why We Chose PETG

For 3D printing material, we went with PETG– and for a good reason:

    • PETG handles higher heat, which is critical near the engine mount

    • It offers flexibility without brittleness, reducing the chance of cracking during landing.

    • Its strong enough to handle the forces of takeoff while still being lightweight enough for flight

The print came out beautifully– smooth layers, clean lines and now ready for testing.

Testing the Rocket Ourselves

We don’t just stop at handing off a print, we print and test a pre-prototype to make sure it actually works. To ensure performance, we decided to take the project one step further: we loaded the rocket with our own model rocket engine, mounted it to our personal launch rig, and launched it ourselves.

What We Tested:

    • Structural integrity under thrust

    • Balance and center of gravity with the engine installed

    • Flight path stability using only the printed fins and body shape

    • Functioning parachute ejection for recovery

The rocket launched cleanly, tracked straight, and returned to the ground with zero damage. This success meant that we can reprint a brand new prototype that was ready to ship to the customer.

Nothing beats seeing a design go from a screen, to a print bed, to its actual function. It’s that final step that proves our work isn’t just about making things look good– it’s about making them work.

What This Means for You

Whether you’re a hobbyist, engineer, business, or someone with a bold concept and no idea where to start, we can help:

    • Turn your idea into a 3D model

    • Print it in the right material for your application

    • Test it when needed using our in-house tools

    • Mass-produce if needed
